6 Hell Bent Reasons You Need a Blog for Business

It’s been called blogging, digital publishing and content marketing. Doesn’t really matter what title you give it – it’s still the ability to publish your ideas in whatever format you like, add your business branding, monetize it, and then blast it out to search engines, social media sites and. . . your very own subscriber list.

In fact, publishing your stuff has been possible since the very first strains of dial up internet began. 

There’s no question that setting up a blog is still one of the best marketing strategies you can put in place for your business. Whether you’re a small service-based business or medium sized company snapping on the heels of the big boys, blogging is a smart and cost efficient way to brand your business, stand out from your competition, and build a dedicated following of fans.

And that’s just the beginning folks!

Why Is A Blog For Business So Important?

There are some people that will tell you that blogging is dead and buried, but when you sift through the naysayers, you’ll find that most in the know like the people at Forbes, will give you a bunch of damn good reasons why your business needs a blog.

Word up.

In my opinion, these are my favourite top 6 reasons you want your business to get blog-a-licious :

1. Blogging Proves You’re Not a Serial Killer

It’s human nature for people to be skeptical about people they first meet. Especially in business. They’re even more suss if you’re trying to sell your services and products online.

That’s why setting up a well-designed blog for business with the correct elements that provides honest, high quality content delivered regularly, will help build rapport and take your your potential clients from skeptical to curiosity and ultimately to the golden gateway of trust.

2. A Blog is Your Home Sweet Virtual Home

Ok, we all know that social media is the ‘where it’s at’ when you want to have a virtual conversation. That doesn’t mean however, that you should let your blog become a ghost town draped in virtual cobwebs.

Your blog should be the base camp for all of your social media activities. The rock solid core of your online platform.

Your blog is where you drive your audience to your content so they can find more about who you are and what you do.

 

Whilst I do like to use the usual social suspects, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin (plus the occasional guest post), all these platforms would lack a purpose if I didn’t direct all my conversations and that energy back to my blog. Not to mention that I would look and feel like a “communications schizophrenic” with messages going out all over the place.

To be honest, it would be impossible for me to talk about all the services I provide or share anything of substance, just by using 140 characters on Twitter. It would take me hundreds of tweets just to share one blog post! Not to mention the nightmare it would take my audience to try and “piece together” the bite-sized chunks of messages. (Note to self: this would be great for a laugh sometime, and see if anyone notices!)

Let Twitter keep doing what it is good at. Which is a handy tool you can use for a quick shout out or “call to action” to check out something. You want to use these savvy sound bites strategically to spark curiosity and entice your readers back to your Home Sweet Home – aka your business blog!

A blog, just like my Brave Beautiful Life (the one I’m very grateful you’re reading right now), creates a platform which allows you to represent who you are. Think of it like the traditional shopfront window. You get to showcase your personality, display your creative ideas, exhibit valuable information and promote what you sell, all in one place – and you have the ability to rotate what’s on offer every week!

Can a blog really create an income stream for your business?  Hell yeah!

Just like I mentioned above your blog is a shop window which displays (albiet passively) what it is you do and what you offer. A blog is a bona fide proven business model. In fact, there a whole host of ways you can monetize your blog, but for now just consider these as food for thought.

Sure blogging in the future may morph into something else, take on a new angle or another style of online platform (I’m intrigued to imagine what will the trend will be when my 7 year old is a teenager) – but even more the reason you need to start your business blog as of yesterday.

  1. Thanks Kym, I do want to be known as a work-life balance expert. I’ve found some great blog ideas from just going over the free coaching enquiry forms, and picking out the themes and language. I’m trying to stop writing like an academic and sound more relational and informal. Finding the time to write a fortnightly blog is challenging for me.

  2. Great tip thanks Fiona. Client feed-back forms are “gold” to a business and your marketing strategy. And whilst there can be a time and place for formality in business, in my opinion blogging is not one of them. People want to have down-to-earth conversations, really get to know who they are working with and get to the ‘heart’ of the matter. As far as finding time goes, haha I’m still mastering that one. Chunking will be the theme for me in 2015!! :)
